Janol lives an unexciting life on a farm on one of the many continents of the Sphere,
a world without rainbows or sunsets, where the sun is always overhead. One day on
one of his many forays into the hinterland, he rescues a foreign dark-skinned woman
named Onnil. Onnil travels back with Janol to his farm where she stays with his family
for about half a year. Janol’s country, however, is in danger from invasion from
the neighbouring continent and so Onnil departs saying that she is going to try to
stop the imminent invasion. Janol decides that he does not want to be a farmer for
the rest of his life and so he leaves with Onnil. Together they travel to the neighbouring
land of Teenin and then onto the distant continent of Estoo. As they journey, Onnil
teaches Janol a forgotten school of magic and Janol discovers the truth about Onnil,
why her soul is orange and the about the nature of the Sphere. Janol also learns
the nature of the magic that underpins and threatens his civilisation and why the
years are named after coffee brands. In the Spoke, which connects the ground to the
sky, at the centre of Estoo, he learns how a mistake made thousands of years ago,
by desperate man, affects his own time. Janol gains the power to defeat the aggressors
from the neighbouring continent of Zedix. Travelling back to his own country, he
must use his knowledge to defeat the invading Zedixians and accept Onnil for what
she is.
